Study surrounded by the history of the Colosseum.

Culture

Italy is one of the great cradles of world culture. It’s the land of the Renaissance, the Colosseum, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo. Cities like Rome, Florence, and Venice are true open-air museums, filled with baroque churches, historic palaces, and art at every corner. Italian cuisine is world-famous, with handmade pasta, Neapolitan pizza, risottos, and gelato enchanting people around the globe. The café culture, wines from Tuscany and Piedmont, and the joy of gathering around the table are key parts of the Italian lifestyle.

Exchange in Italy

Courses and Programs

Italy is perfect for anyone looking to learn Italian through full immersion. Schools offer intensive language courses, as well as programs that combine Italian with cultural activities like cooking, art, and art history — a fun and engaging way to learn the language.

Visa

For courses longer than 90 days, students must apply for a visa at the Italian consulate before departure. You’ll need to show a letter of acceptance from the school, proof of financial means, and valid health insurance.

Work

Student visas allow part-time work up to 20 hours per week, as long as the course is officially recognized and has sufficient weekly hours. Many jobs are in cafés, restaurants, or retail, especially in large tourist cities like Rome and Milan.

Tips for your exchange in Italy

Cultural Outings

Italy breathes art and history. Museums like the Uffizi in Florence and the Vatican Museums in Rome are must-sees. Cities such as Bologna and Milan offer a youthful cultural scene, with student fairs, public exhibitions, and open-air events in city squares and university areas.

Must-See Attractions

Explore the Colosseum and the Vatican in Rome, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and Milan Cathedral. Wander through Venice’s narrow canals and take photos in the stunning landscapes of Cinque Terre. In Florence, don’t miss the sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo.

Short Trips

From Rome, take day trips to Naples, Pompeii, or Orvieto. From Florence, visit Siena or San Gimignano. Regional trains are efficient and affordable, perfect for weekend visits to nearby historic towns.

Cost of Living

Most students share apartments or live in student residences. Many restaurants offer a student menu, and supermarkets like Coop and Esselunga have great prices. In cities like Bologna and Ferrara, cycling is a popular and practical option for students.

Food and Gastronomy

Enjoy fresh pasta, Neapolitan pizza, artisanal gelato, and Italian espresso. Markets like Mercato Centrale (Florence) and Campo de' Fiori (Rome) offer great food at fair prices and a chance to connect with locals.

Nightlife and Social Life

Aperitivo is a daily ritual: bars serve drinks with buffet-style snacks around sunset. University towns like Padua, Bologna, and Rome have lively bars, student-friendly clubs, and a vibrant nightlife scene accessible for all budgets.

I’d like to thank WTS for all the support. Everything went smoothly. The trip was amazing — and the city even more so. The host family was perfectly located, and the cooking classes were fantastic. I’m already back to my busy routine, but counting down to my next holiday. This experience exceeded my expectations. I met incredible people, learned far more than I imagined, and came back wanting to see even more of the world. I highly recommend it to anyone dreaming of something truly unforgettable!
